Fencing FAQs

What is fencing?

Fencing is an Olympic sport that uses swords to score points. At Fence St. Louis, we practice specifically with saber.

Is fencing like sword-fighting in the movies?

The Princess Bride, Pirates of the Caribbean, or Star Wars - all of those use stage combat sword-fighting to tell stories. Many fencers are inspired to start because of these scenes. Although Olympic fencing is different from sword-fighting in the movies, it’s just as fast-paced and fun.

Why should I start fencing?

As a unique individual sport, fencing is a fun workout that teaches students how to think tactically while improving their physical abilities. Fencers come in all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds.

What should I bring with me to my first fencing practice?

You will need to wear athletic clothing - long pants or leggings, athletic shoes and shirt, and bring a water bottle. Fencing is a sport so it’s important that you feel comfortable moving in what you wear. We provide all fencing-specific equipment to our beginners.

Can I join even if I’ve never fenced before?

Absolutely! Fence St. Louis welcomes fencers of all levels, from beginners to competitive. Beginners will need to sign up for the age-appropriate beginners class. Please read more about our classes on our Fencing Classes page.

Who can fence?

Anyone 5+ years of age can learn to fence at Fence St. Louis. We offer a variety of classes based on age and experience for everyone. We believe fencing is for all people, of any background.

Will I be able to compete?

We offer programs designed to bring our fencers up to a competition-ready level, but realize everyone has different goals.
