Why Fence St. Louis?

Fence St. Louis started with one belief - that fencing is for all people.

We believe fencing is a sport for anyone, and everyone, regardless of their age, ability, or background. Fencing is a sport that allows individuals to not only develop into fierce competitors, but learn valuable life skills such as confidence, critical thinking, keeping calm under pressure, and so much more. Fence St. Louis believes in developing not just athletes, but the whole person. We offer age-appropriate and skill-appropriate classes and lessons for all individuals, whether they are brand new to fencing, fence for fun, or are already an athlete looking to compete at the highest level.

Founded and owned by the daughter-mother duo of Annamaria Lu and Monica McGill, Ed.D., Fence STL is one of the few fencing clubs in the country that is both women-owned and where the head coach is a woman. This gives us a unique perspective on how to develop an inclusive and empowering environment for providing first-class training to fencing athletes while also developing their overall sense of belonging, respect for themselves and others, and their self-confidence.

Pillars of our fencing club include:

  • Provide an inclusive, respectful environment that is welcoming and supportive to all.

  • Encourage mutual respect between and among our athletes.

  • Develop athletes' fencing skills, including their self-confidence and self-worth as a fencer.

  • Complement home and community values by providing an encouraging atmosphere that ensures a safe place for all fencers to learn how to fence.
